STRATEGY: Define feature/deposit 2022. Clarify situation in remaining portion of pit. Remove 2023 from below present level.
SUMMARY: Investigation of the east edge of pit, which was in contact with chalky feature/deposit indicated that, since it disappeared into the pit wall, it was most probably a feature which had been cut during the excavation of the pit itself. It was accordingly assigned feature number 272. The third of the pit not occupied by f272 was assigned 2023, largely a stratigraphic convenience since the brown clayey loam matrix closely resembled that of 2019 above it. Artefact content was sparse. After only a few cm of depth a harder, uneven layer with a higher deposit of pebbles was encountered. Without the clayey, 'greasy' quality shared by each of the pit fill lots, this unit appears to represent the bottom of the pit. It was exposed in all areas of the pit not covered by f272, except the extreme NE corner, where the fill was softer but could not effectively be examined due to the limited nature of the exposure (see sketch). With the excavation of all remaining portions of 2023, work on f268 was considered complete.
