Daily Log

The trench designated VT-2 was set up this morning.  It is situated almost immediately south of the fence enclosing the Italian excavation of the forno in 1970 and is roughly at right angles to the slope of the hill and the road.  It measures 1 X 3 m. with the long side oriented east to west.

The entire surface layer of the trench was designated locus 1.  Elevations were measured and photographs taken.

Opening depths of locus 1:

NE corner:  49 cm. above datum point

NW corner:  104 cm.

SW corner:  106 cm.

SE corner:  52 cm.

Munsell for locus 1:  hue 2.5 Y 4/4 olive brown

The surface of this trench is a combination of patches of sod and areas of loose small pebbles.  Excavation of locus 1 was begun.  Terracotta fragments and pottery sherds were recovered along with generous amounts of modern debris (e.g., broken glass, wire, plastics).  The terracotta fragments were especially heavy in the eastern 3rd of the trench.  Among the terracotta fragments recovered were pieces of dolium while among the pottery sherds found were rim and body sherds of black slip ware.
