STRATEGY: Clean surface reached in 1996 excavation. Remove 2 arbitary spits from 1995 and 1996 seasons.

SUMMARY: Lot 875 closed when cleaning was completed. Spits A and B removed in lot 876 (see sketch). About 3cm more are to be removed from the upper area of trench 446N, 596E. A slightly darker area was seen above the cobbled area in the northen part of the trench (f209). It appeared to have a curved edge following the line created by the cobbles. This was given a new lot number 877 for the fill within the curving edge. There appears to be a sloping, harder surface below lot 877, with stones perhaps running to the cobbles below. This may be a shallow lined pit, but needs further excavation. On removal of lot 876 at the southern end of the trench, a small white bead was recovered (sf120). It appears to be shell (see sketch). Lots still open are 876 and 877.
