July 24 Saturday A.M. only

The galestra around the Eastern half of the feature was excavated for another 25 cm. - it is extremly hard now - more so than were the upper levels.

The exposed stones left for the architect's drawing in the western half of the feature were removed, down to the lower level of the stones exposed in the Eastern half of feature - these could not be kept for safety reasons.  This work was just completed along with the removal of the ancient fill to expose more of the contour of the ancient excavation trench - these newl\xf2y exposed levels of it - made by the removal of the unven stone - dirt courses- seem to belly out ( to the west ) so that the diameter is slightly greater than that of the upper (first removed) section of the cylindrical trench.  It wasw noted that the dirt fill course between the second and third courses of stones removed, while irregular, was thicker than previously excavated courses.

No finds were made in the fill around the stones.  Next the exposed new cross-section will be cleaned and the dirt removed from the center of the feature without further sectioning if possible.

It seems likely now that the bottom of the feature will soon be reached, since workmen set to clearing away more of the galestra around the Eastern half exposed a section of bedrock in the northern corner of our lowest excavation trench - bedrock slants less sharply to East - it must, however , be continuing close to the stone feature.
