Work continued today by picking and sorting soil in locus 8 and troweling soil in locus 10 to the level of the surrounding area (approximately 8-10 cm). While defining the linear rock feature in locus 9 , a possibly perforated rim was uncovered (special find #1). In locus 8 , several pieces of lightly worn architectural terracotta have come to the surface. Many have been left in situ to explore the extent of the terracotta. Locus 10 has continued to yield a moderate amount of pottery and terracotta, though at a diminishing rate.

After locus 10 was leveled down, the baulk walls were cleaned and roots were clipped. Meanwhile, locus 9 yielded an iron fragment (special find #2), and a decorated handle fragment (special find #3), and the baulk wall of locus 10 produced a small fragment of bronze (special find #5).

Before completing work in locus 9 and 10 for the day, a large piece of worked antler was discovered in locus 9 (special find #4). For the rest of the day, work will be discontinued in locus 9 and 10 to await further instruction from the excavation director.

After excavating locus 8 approximately 10-15 centimeters into the earth, a new soil has been reached. This soil is a dark brown, dark orange, and yellow compacted soil, thus it is more clay like and more difficult to excavate. Lying on top of the soil are stacked pieces of architectural terracotta and a few rocks. Due to the very large rock sitting in the center of the locus, a new locus will be opened (locus 11) to explore the soil further. Locus 11 is the 1 x 1.2 meter directly to the north of locus 8, and lies at an elevation nearly equivalent to the opening of locus 8. There are four rocks in the northern section of the trench that will remain in situ, as they are a part of the linear rock feature extending from CA 74 into CA 70.

Within moments of excavating locus 11 , a small piece of cylindrical iron was unearthed (special find #7), several pieces of broken slag (special find #8), and a spindle whirl

(special find #10). Also, a pottery fragment with a stamped decoration was found in the pottery box (special find #9).
