Daily Log 6/7/2010

A pick pass was done in the western 2 meters. More roots were uncovered and sherds of pottery were found. The large rock at 5.5 E, 2.5 N was further exposed. While cleaning up the pick pass's soil it was noted that to the north of the rock was the medium brown soil with carbon, and then to the south of the rock was a medium brown soil without carbon. Roots were clipped back and part of the stumps defined. The western baulk wall was cleaned and trimmed. The wall between CA 61 extension and CA 65 was knocked down till the trenches were level. Once CA 65's floor is at a level below the backfill of CA 61 then a proper baulk wall will be maintained. The eastern 2 meters of the trench picked. While cleaning up this pass a piece of medieval pottery with glaze was uncovered (special find #1). This piece came from the area north of stump C where there are still a lot of roots. While continuing to clean the pass a smooth and possible non-local stone was uncovered (special find #2). This was also near the roots of stump C.

Special find #1

Locus 2

29.14 mAE

Special Find #2

Smoothed, possible non-local stone

Locus 2

7.96 E, 3.32 N

29.19 mAE

A pick pass was done in the western 2 meters of the trench, except for the meter and half south of the large rock and between the western baulk and stump A. Because of a lack of carbon in this area it has been decided to use trowels to level the soil and see if there is any clear boundry in the soil. While cleaning up the soil a piece of slag was found (special find #3).

Special Find # 3

Locus 2

3.31 N, 5.62 E

29.11 mAE

A pick pass was done in the eastern 2 meters of the trench. In this pass a patch of carbon was uncovered, but it doesn't appear to continue. The carbon was found roughly at 7.80 E, 3.20 N and at 29.15 mAE.

A pick pass was completed in the western half of the trench. A piece of shell was uncovered (special find #4) just north of the large stump (D).

Special Find #4
