T-27 1985 Bone Summary

No fragments of bone were excavated from T-27 in 1985 of any kind; worked, cut, or untouched.

T-27 1985 Ivory Summary

No fragments of bone (sic) were excavated from T-27 in 1985 of any kind.

T-27 1985 Metal Summary

Negligible bronze contact or sheet was found in T-27 1985.  A large chunk (2.9 cm X 1.7 cm X 1.1. cm) of bronze with three finished flat surfaces was excavated from about 80 cm deep.  A large piece of slag (possibly iron) was also found but at a much higher level.

T-27 1985 Pottery Summary

Pottery from T-27 1985 was categorized into six types: bucchero, fine greyware, fine orangeware, orangeware, impasto and coarseware as per MT.IV p. 35 .  As so little pottery was found in this area all was saved.  No pithos fragments were found.  The pottery was mostly coarseware, orangeware and impasto with no real fineware recovered (60% orangeware, 30% impasto, 10% the rest).  In general, the topsoil and stratum over the stony layer yielded a few, very worn fragments, the stony layer next to none, and only a few more from the claylike soil beneath.  Almost none showed any evidence of burning.  In general the pottery appeared characteristic of a non-specific slope area.  Pottery was all badly worn and fragmented through travel and erosion.  Placement appeared random and no joins other than fresh breaks were found.  All pottery was consolidated for storage in AC. T-27 1985 Final Summary

Excavation of the T-27 area in 1985 was concluded after one week due to lack of manpower.  Although meters JK/66-69 were excavated to a depth of 60-80 cm no evidence was found which could assuredly link the area to a kiln site.  At a level of 70-80 cm, however, small evidences of carbon and heavily burned tile were found, perhaps indicating the proximity of the heavier burning associated with a kiln.  Stratigraphy followed this pattern:

1. topsoil -- dark brown, roots, stones
2. grey-brown, claylike soil
3. stony layer -- "fill"
4. grey brown, claylike soil with burn flecks

The layer of dense small stones extending from approximately 20-50 cm was almost entirely devoid of material.  It was determined not to be the upper levels of a moat.

Material found was typical of a non-specific slope area.  Note that the entire site had been scraped following the Upper Building destruction.  The surrounding slopes, including the moats to a certain extent, to have thus assumed assumed an almost dump-like character.  Pottery and terracotta excavated from T-27 were usually very worn and fragmentary.  One piece of frieze plaque (banquet) and several other possible fragments including a cavetto

were excavated from the topsoil and lower down.  A well-preserved piece of ridgepole was also found.  Pottery finds were quite indeterminate in nature.  No ivory or worked bone was found.  Metallics were limited to a large very corroded piece of iron and a rectangular piece of bronze with three finished surfaces.  A number of unidentifiable terracotta objects were kept along with several marked tiles.  Several "slingstones" were also found.

In general, minimal material in very poor condition was found.  Virgin soil was not reached so that no accurate configuration of the ancient topography of the slope could be determined.  Further excavation is necessary both to plot the ancient slope as well as to further specify the character of the area, with particular reference to a kiln sire.
