A.M.                                                                                            6 July 2009

Excavation continued in locus 4 this morning in the northeast sector of the trench and finished. Approximately one bowl of terracotta fragments was

(square equals 10 cm.)

recovered along with17 sherds of pottery and five pieces of bone.

Closing depths of locus 4

NW (47.4-S/177.1-E) = 151 cm. below datum pt., 26.79 m. above absolute elevation

NE (47.3-S/180.3-E) = 140 cm. below datum pt., 26.90 m. above absolute elevation

SE-1 (49.2-S/180.2-E) = 153 cm. below datum pt., 26.77 m. above absolute elevation

SE-2 (49.4-S/179.9-E) = 153 cm. below datum pt., 26.77 m. above absolute elevation

SW (49.3-S/176.7-E) = 153 cm. below datum pt., 26.77 m. above absolute elevation

Since the mottling of the soil is greatly diminishing and galestra is appearing around the north, west and south edges of the trench locus 5 was declared. A diagram of the new locus was drawn, new co-ordinates were set out and measured (see p. 81), and photos taken.

Openking co-ordinates of locus 5:

NW (47.4-S/177.1-E) = 151 cm. below datum pt., 26.79 m. above absolute elevation

N-1 (47.4-S/177.9-E) = 149 cm. below datum pt., 26.81 m. above absolute elevation

N-2 (47.9-S/178.4-E) = 149 cm. below datum pt., 26.81 m. above absolute elevation

N-3 (47.7-S/178.7-E) = 148 cm. below datum pt., 26.82 m. above absolute elevation

NE (47.7-S/180.3-E) = 149 cm. below datum pt., 26.81 m. above absolute elevation

SE-1 (49.2-S/180.2-E) = 153 cm. below datum pt., 26.77 m. above absolute elevation

SE-2 (49.4-S/179.9-E) = 153 cm. below datum pt., 26.77 m. above absolute elevation

SW (48.4-S/176.9-E) = 150 cm. below datum pt., 26.80 m. above absolute elevation

The soil of locus 5 appears to be brown and

contains a small number of orange, white and carbon inclusions. Excavation of locus 5 was started this morning.

P.M.

Excavation of locus 5 continued this afternoon. The locus was takened down approximately 10 cm. Approximately four bowls of terracotta fragments were recovered. Many of these fragments appear to be resting on galestra. The stones in this locus are increasing in quantity as one heads towards the southeast corner of the trench. Thirtysix pottery sherds were found along with nine bone fragments, among which is a jaw fragment, and one tooth.

Special Finds:

  • Find #1
  • 49.0-S/180.2-E
  • 26.63 m. above absolute elevation
