July 9, 1971
Photographs taken. A hot day.
Work was continued in Rectangle 8, grid A-D 1. Stra. A is consistent all over this area. It is immediately followed by str. D which is reddish-brown with some carbon. It is noticeable that the amount of material in this cut is considerably less than that in R7. There are no pithoi fragments, and only two boxes of tiles were collected.
So far few sherds have been found- less than one strawberry carton. Conspicuous is a rim and part of the side
- R8-A 1-4 (D)
nail or tack
of a pot which has a row of an incised "hour-glass" pattern was found in R7, grid F3.
Two spindle whorls were found. One small bag of bronze slivers was collected. One small bronze nail.
One Greek sherd- a painted heavy fabric belonging to a plate with a round rim- was found. It joins the sherds from R7 which show birds and rosettes.
