Morning

We continue the cut begun monday brining Quadrents 0-1 DD-EE down to a depth of ca 60cm below the surface. The dark soil yields many stones and some large rocks but not the kind of rock packing we have seen further west. The cut is 30-35cm deep. At about 15cm down we encounter many tile fragments, especially along the west side and often between rocks. Between rocks, a number of interesting terracotta fragments emmerge (#'s 1- (number missing) ) and among the plaster as well.

As we extend this cut west in DD-EE we find a dense rock packing in a reddish soil this we see ascended with the agger from here (the eastern edge of Quadrent 1) to meet that encountered, and largely removed, above. It seems clear that we are not dealing with a secondary wall unless it is buried below. The packing asecends just below topsoil (ca. (number missing ) cm from the surface) but sometimes rises into and above it.

The topsoil yields a rusty file with a decaying wood handle as we remove it over the stones up to quadrent, several large rocks and many stones come down as well. A large stump is removed in DD3. Small quantity of tile appears among the stones, which rise to the crest of the agger and the top of the wall, which we reach at Quadrent 4 and clean, largely with hammers.

Work in R22 C-D 1-2 yields white matter, charcoal, sherds and tile below the level (ca 5-10cm) of the adjacent plaster fall.

Afternoon

We clean the remaining soil from the rocks exposed this morning in DD-EE 2-4 for possible photography and drawing, finding only a few bits of pottery. The soil among these rocks below topsoil is full of red and yellow matter characteristic of burn fill. Some tile fragments also appear. The dirt itself is dark and granular. See photo opposite page , taken 18 June.

We also extend the cut in Rectangle 22 outward from the plaster fall of D3 bringing all of Quadrents C-E 2-3 down about 10 cm from the surface (at the east edge of Rect. 22) or about 15-20cm from the previous floor. We continue throughout to find chunks of pink-orange plaster with reed impressions at ca 5-10cm down into the cut- not in such quantity as the "fall" in D-3. Also at this level a fair amount of tile and pottery. The light, clayey, yellowish soil soon shades into a heavier burn layer with much carbonized wood- incl\xf2uding a large, perhaps worked chunk (#2) and more of the whitish grey "plaster". There is no clear change in the soil even at the 5-10cm point to indicate a floor level. Bone (unburnt) is plentiful and a large piece of apparently unworked antler is found as well (#3). Much of the pottery is a fine red-orange imapasto but bucchero is not absent.
