AM worked in magazzino
PM The last meter of yesterday's pick pass was completed. Only a handful of very small tile fragments and one small pottery fragment were recovered.
After the light brownish clayey layer with small boulders was removed the level of the eastern part of the trench was much lower than the western part (P/Q 33-35). Thus the removal of the galestra-like soil seemed to be the next step. Removal proceeded with pick and shovel. The beginning levels were 59cm from the ground level of the Q/R 38-39 peg (eastern level) and 58cm on the western side. Very little pottery and tile was recovered.
A piece of carbonized wood was found in P/Q 33 at 65cm from ground level at the Q/R 38-39. One third of a liter milk carton of pottery was recovered and less than one quarter of a cassetta of tile.
Removal of this light brown clayey layer and galestra-like layer revealed a darker brown clayey soil similar to that revealed by removal of the layer of small boulders removed from P/Q 36-40 on 7/7/93 (see pp. 47-49). This lighter colored layer now shows very clearly in the baulk. It sits beside the stony and appears to bave been deposited at the same time or if one is earlier than the other, it is the lighter brown clayehy and galestra-like soil removed today.
The ending levels taken from the Q/R 38-39 datum point were 61cm on the west 63cm at the center and 61 cm at the east.
The ending levels of the P/Q 36-40 excavation of brown clayey soil with boulders were 59cm on the west and 61cm on the east.
