The layer of tiles above a stone packing at 85-90 cm in MNO/77-79 continued to be cleaned down and was completed. The area was swept and brushed for photographing. Note that between the tiles where the trench was taken to ~1 m, dark black soil was encountered. From this soil, animal bones and teeth were recovered, perhaps indicating that an animal was killed when this tile fell upon it.
Also, in meter M-77 at ~90 cm, there is no concentration of tile but there is dark, black soil surrounding stones, perhaps a continuation of the stone packing.
The three pan tiles stacked upon one another in meter WV/67-68 at ~40-50 cm, just above the terracotta/mortar floor, were cleaned down and the area occupied by the stump in W-68, which was removed yesterday afternoon, was cleaned down to floor level. The floor appears to break for 10 cm wide, 10 cm deep depression, immediately adjacent on the eastern edge of the
tiles which are stacked on top of one another.
The tiles themselves, though exhibiting many ancient ractures, appear to preserve a complete length and width. Indeed, the tiles are nearly complete. The flanges along the eastern edge of the tiles have fallen down from the "pans" themselves. Note that the tiles are oriented such that the flanges run north-south, with the indentation of the flanges found at the southern end of the tiles. The apparent length of the pantiles is ~60 cm while the width (flange to flange) is ~53 cm.
Meters UVW/65-73 were swept down, as were meters RST/65-73.
