tile- 5

pottery- 3

Work continued in XY 72 exposing unfired covertiles.  In X 72 the eastern ends appeared badly burnt.  There was a heavy burn layer over these tiles.  Some plaster and fired tile was found over and in this burn layer.  Under the burn layer and just over the tiles was a plaster layer.  Some of this appeared burnt.  Very little tile or plaster from above the burn layer showed signs of burning.  The few pieces of pottery did not appear burnt.

The tiles in T 73 were brushed and consolidated.  The whole area of unfired covertiles was photographed to further document their state of preservation and the tile and plaster layer above them.

A sketch of the section above the lion head morint(?) was done then a topsoil cut was taken in M-N 83.  very little tile or pottery was recovered.  the soil was dark brown and rooty.

In 0 74 and 75 a topsoil cut was made then work continued with hammer and mestiline.  two cassette of tile and plaster were recovered.  From the topsoil cut came about 1/3 cassetta of tile and the rest from underneath.  In O 78 there continued to be flecks of burn but no great concentration.

In ST 59-61 work continued.  A heavy red burn layer with a lot

of fineware appeared in TS towards meter 60 but overlapping into 59 and 61. A great deal of carbon was found in this red area and much of the pottery was burned.  This area though only partially excavated appeared to begin in T 60 and be roughly circular in shape, extending into S 61 and 59.  This dark red soil and black burn with fineware was also encountered at a very deep layer in T-U 61.  It was discovered when excavating another artifact extending below this cut.
