A.M.

Devoted this day to cleaning and defining the dispersal of stones across the trench floor.  The stones range in size from 20 x 26.5 x 24.5 cm to 10 x 6 x 7 and present two particularily interesting groupings.  The first, in meter S51 E160 and overlapping into S52 E160, is a circular arrangement of stones of various sizes, though mostly large.  In the center of the stones is packed dirt containing the recovered pieces of a buccher vessel ( p. 235 #2 ) and the in situ next of the fragments, along with a large piece of bone cupped by the various fragments and other ancillary small bone fragments.

Nearby, an arrangement of small stones averaging {information not provided} and arranged in a double file moving east-west across the center of the trench (meters 52S 160-161E).  Interspersed among these stones are terracotta pieces, with one in particular wedged underneath a stone.  The stones themselves are in locus 15, but not directly above a soil change.  Because of the smalness and dense packing

of the stones, it was decided they were most probably not architectural.  Tomorrow, the stones are likely to be removed.

P.M.

Measurements of the stones were taken, along with photos.  Also, the baulk walls of meters S52-54 E160, S54 E161, and S53 E162.

From locus 15, 1/16 cassetta of small worn terracotta fragments and almost 2 latte boxes of ceramic, though it has been subdivided by meter into 6 boxes.  The ceramic ranges from bucchero to coarseware and several diagnostic fragments were found, as well as bone.  From the baulk trim of the southern half of the trench came a dozen fragments of terracotta and 1/2 latte of ceramic -- mostly impasto.  2 pieces of bronze were found in the baulk wall.  There were 5 special finds.
