STRATEGY: 1. Continue with excavation of 1508. 2. Begin excavating 1510. 3. Begin excavating 1509.
SUMMARY: 1. 1508 taken down in 2 spits. Firstly a 10cm spit with small picks. This revealed nothing and soil still formation soil. We took off another c. 7cm spit with the big pick. Some small, fist sized rocks coming up. Finds included pot, bone, flint, slag, a fragments of a palette, a sling stone and still some roof tile fragments. NB, first spit 4 x 2.80m, second spit 4 x 2.60m. 2. Took spits of 1510 to see if it contained a pit. Could not detect any edges, but this may be due to soil formation. The soil is certainly fully developed with tauf-like patches, calcite flecks and animal burrows. Each spit was c. 5cm deep. Finds included pot, bone and flint. The bone included redeposited human bone (which apppear to be dumped without any order and <25% of a whole skeleton). A couple of pieces of roof tile could have come in with animal holes and.or dumped into the pit, which explains nicely why there is late pottery in this end of the trench (which seems to be largely prehistoric as argued previously). 3. Took 1 x c. 7cm spit of 1509= 2.80 x 1.20 m. Next spit will be 2.80 x 1.40 m. Contined pot, bone and flint.
