7 boxes of tile shards discarded from 43-45 E-I

Note:  Between 3 and 4 meter area being left around tree in 41-43 H-I but will probably be removed tomorrow, with tree.

Topsoil 31-32 J-M.  Tile shards discarded: 1/2 cassetta.  Yellow earth stratum.

Angelo and Zevio continued digging down through yellow earth stratum below black topsoil to tile stratum in I 42-43.  Continued cleaning down to the stratum in whole of area E-I 42-45.  Tile fall seems to rise from east to west in 42-45 G-I.  See p. 158.

Three other men continued removing topsoil in 31-35 J-M.  Four cassetta of tile sherds discarded from Wednesday.

  • Find #1a
  • I-43
  • Banquet frieze fragment, probably part of same plaque as fragments found on top of gorgon and tile on Wednesday (see p. 146).  Just above tile stratum in yellow earth stratum.  Dog under table.  Also joins with portion from p. 154.

  • Find #2
  • 43-I
  • Yellowish earth stratum, top of tile stratum, 9 meters from north wall
  • Partly in wall of trench, which necessitated taking out part of wall and extending a few cm into what would be J grid
  • Gorgon, joins to backer pegs found in T19

For the moment, we are clearing down to the tile stratum and cleaning the top of these before lifting them in order to see what has fallen on top.  Note that Find #2 is only about 5-10 cm from that gorgon found yesterday and at the same level.

Men in 31-33 J-M have encountered a large amount of rock in the northeast corner of the trench -- mostly 32 M.  Rock to be cleared and left until it can be determined what it is.

Later:  Rock appears to extend from west to east in 31-33 M ( ).  Rock seems to extend down the hill to north

and will necessitate extending the trench 31-32 J-M at least another meter later (into N).  Line of rock in M is very regular, suggesting that it might be a wall.

More cover tile fragments in this area than pan tile fragments.  A possibility, though it is really hard to tell.

Cover tile and ca. 81.5 cm pantile as appeared in trench: upper tile fall, both upside down.  Tile fall slants upward in corner, sherds smaller.  Approximately 35 cm below the topsoil.

Men begin to clear another 10-15 cm in yellow earth stratum in 31-32 J-M.

H-I 44: appearance of a possibly complete (though broken) tile.  Angelo continues to clean down to and around it in order to determine its extent.  It appears at about 50 cm below surface of topsoil.

It now appears that tile sherds found in 42-43 G-I do not constitute a real fall, but that a tile layer really begins again toward the end of 43 and in 44.  Removal of tree and excavation of area around it will make it easier to view the tile fall in this area as a whole.

Zesio excavates and clears around what may be a complete cover tile in 43-44 GH, which abuts the broken pan tile, if such it is.  See .

Note: No pottery found in the section of the tile fall was removed today.

  • Find #3
  • G 43
  • In yellow earth, just above tiles
  • Spindle whorl with moulded vertical lines; fried black originally, now worn to red in some places

Bucchero sherds, including a base, found while cleaning down to tile fall.  Otherwise not really much pottery.  Tile fall definitely seems to go uphill in northeast corner of this section of trench (44-45) and becomes extremely concentrated.  Some rock removed just above tile fall.

Note: No pottery found while lifting H45 section of trench.

Tiny fragment of bronze noted in H45.  There seems to be some concentration of bucchero fragments in 45 G just above stratum of tile fall and to south of it.

Tile fall noticeably peters out on a fairly even line in H.

Cover and pan tile lifted after being photographed with whole tile fall.

  • Find #6
  • H/G 43/44
  • Complete cover tile and antefix backer with attachment for gorgon at one end and indentation for insertion into next tile at other end.  Seven fragments.

19720108

  • Find #7
  • 44/45 H/I
  • Pan tile; appeared upside down in tile stratum with letter theta on one side.  Overall length: 80 cm.
