Introduction

Excavations in CA33 in 1990 uncovered the remains of a probable roasting pit or forno for bronze production (see J. Berkin III 123-131 ).  Continued excavation of CA33 in 1991, in addition to clarifying the plan of the original forno/roasting pit, also revealed the remains of a possible, second, "lower" forno/roasting pit further to the north.  however, due to time constraints, the complete excavation of both these features could not be accomplished by the close of the 1991 season.  The excavation of CA33 will therefore be continued in 1992 with substantially the same objectives as outlined

in 1991 (see J. Berkin III 1991 138-141 ):

1) The completed excavation of the eastern portion of the upper forno and the obtainment of a stratigraphic section approaching it from the west.

2) the continued investigation of the rock concentration in meters J-K/13-14.

3) the possible excavation through the upper forno's "floor" level adn the obtainment of a section through it.

4) the continued clearing of the second, or "lower" forno to the north in meters H-I/13-14.

5) the continued exploration of the area around the fornos in

the hope of finding further avidence of ancient activity, metallurgical or otherwise.

A NOTE ON TERMINOLOGY

Because of the lack of certainty regarding the precise function of the features uncovered in CA33, it was decided to adopt the neutral term "forno" or "forno/roasting pit" for its description.
