Due to the removal of a stump in SF-5 (see CGM II pg ___), the string dividing loci 8 and 9 was removed. This line spanned from the coordinates 139 E / 33.73 S to 136 E / 34 S. It will be re-strung when the stump on which the line was placed is fully removed by work in SF-5.

A pick pass was begun in loci 7 and 8 in order to level the soil between the two loci.

The soil in Locus 7 is medium brown/olive colored with small inclusions of rock and carbon. It is dense and clay-like and comes up in small crumbles when picked.

The soil is locus 8 is dark brown with small inclusions of rocks and roots. It is less dense than that of locus 7.

The pick pass in loci 7 and 8 produced little material. Locus 8 yielded mostly well-worn terracotta, while locus 7 yielded a few small pieces of terracotta and bone. Material totals will be recorded in the afternoon.

NOTE: Work in SF-5 on 9 July 2008 (see CGM II, pg ___) revealed bedrock in the area north of the rock feature within the trench. For this reason it is believed that the Orientalizing layer is at a lower elevation than was previously thought.

Â…moving from the west to the east. The soil in locus 7 remains consistent with the previous description on pg 73. Some small rocks were also found concentrated in the south-western area of locus 7.

Around mid-morning the pick pass in locus 7 was briefly halted due to the discovery of a clump of potentially larger rocks near the western end of the south wall. It was decided that while the soil loosened by the pick pass is cleared, the rocks will be further exposed using a trowel.

After a full pick pass of locus 7, the loose soil was picked up. A medium sized carbon flake was found in the south-west corner. Also, a soil change was noticed in that same corner. The soil appears to change from a medium brown/olive to a dark brown. The rock and carbon inclusions as well as the clay-like texture appear to remain the same.

More medium sized flecks of carbon were found in the south-west corner. One was made special find #3. The others were discarded due to their uncertain location in the soil of locus 7.

When all of the loose dirt was cleared from the pick pass of locus 7, the soil yielded mainly terracotta and bone fragments. Material totals will be recorded in the afternoon.

Next, a pick pass was completed in locus 8. The soil is dark brown, clay-like, and comes up in medium sized chunks. It is filled with small-medium sized rocks and roots. For this reason, it is still considered topsoil.

At the same time as the pick pass in locus 8, the rock configuration mentioned on pg 77 in locus 7 was further exposed using a trowel. As yet, the stones appear to be medium sized (10-15 cm) and loosely packed. If more similarly sized rocks appear, the configuration will be sketched.

While the loose soil was being picked up from the pick pass in locus 8, it was noticed that in the northern part of the locus there were chunks of yellowish brown soil with inclusions of rocks and carbon.

Next, the pick pass extended into the south eastern corner of locus 8. While the loose dirt was being cleared, it was noticed that the soil, which is still dark brown, began to have larger inclusions of carbon and rock.

At the same time as the loose soil was picked up in locus 8, the surface of locus 7 was leveled using trowels. The rock configuration mentioned on pg 77 and 79 was exposed to the greatest extent possible. It was decided that the rocks were too small to be associated with an architectural feature. For this reason, the rocks will be removed in the next pick pass of locus 7.

Towards the end of the afternoon, locus 7 was picked through in its entirety. The soil remains the same as the description on pg 73. This pick pass yielded small amounts of terracotta and bone. Material totals will be recorded at the end of todayÂ’s entry.

While the loose soil was being cleared in locus 7, locus 9 was closed. The locus was closed because the focus of excavation has shifted away from the rock feature that comprised locus 9. Instead, work will focus on the area to the north of the rock feature. This is because in the neighboring trench SF-5 bedrock with a circular feature was discovered. Excavations in SF-4 will now attempt to reveal similar bedrock and any comparable features. To this end, a new locus, locus 10, was laid out using two baselines. Coordinates and elevations will be taken on the following day. It spans roughly half of what was previously locus 5.
