Conclusion

Excavation of CB 52 during the 2012 season was somewhat successful. While it did not meet the first goal, to find evidence of non-elite habitation on the western side of the hill, it did provide new information about the stratigraphy and topography of the Civitate B area. When the Locus 3 soil was fully excavated from the trench, a large rock packing of stones approximately ten to thirty centimeters in length appeared over the entire area of the trench, following a downward slope from the north to south wall of the trench. It is difficult to say whether this feature was naturally formed or manmade, but it is a terracing feature. The presence of ancient materials above the terracing indicates that it was at least exposed during an ancient time period. Additionally, it is roughly parallel to the Medieval road, so whether it is naturally occurring or manmade it provides support to the road. Though the goal of exploring Civitate B more was also met, there is still the need for more excavation in this area to better elucidate its ancient role, function, and context.
