Daily Log

July 14, 1984

Morning:

Tile: 7

Pottery: 7

Tile was lifted from the southeast corner of S/58.  Some showed burn and there was a little slag and a couple isolated carbon spots.  One-third box of mostly unburned coarseware was fuond.

Floor was uncovered in Q-X/79-82.

In Q/59-61, the cut was brought down first to ~75 cm, then to the trench floor level of ~1-1.05 m.  The red burn area where all the fine ware was found continued in Q/59-61 at about 80 cm.  Several incised bucchero fragments were found, including one with a stamp.  About two cassette of tile and plaster chunks, some quite large and with reed impressions, were found.  Occasionally, there was a piece of slag or vitrified material but except for the red area, no burn in the soil.  Three boxes of pottery were mostly fineware and bucchero, including a little bone and coarseware.  A lot of plaster was found in Q/59, both in chunks and coloring the soil.  At floor level, particularly in Q/60, there was a heavy carbon layer.

In V-X/58-57, the cut was completed to 40-50 cm.  The next cut in V/58-57 went to the floor level at about 60-65 cm.  Some soil was left over the floor.  OF two boxes of pottery, there was a little bucchero, mostly impasto and some was burned.  Very little tile was found.

There was a little plaster and vitrified material.

In XY/72-73, more course tiles were uncovered.  Some were in rather poor shape and show signs of burning with burnt plaster over them.  The uncovered areas were painted with PVA.

In P/83, the cut was continued down to floor level.  The soil was brown throughout with no slag or carbon.  Of two cassette of tile, only 4-5 pieces were burnt.  Of the pottery, most was impasto with some fineware and bone.
