Daily Log 15/7/11

It was decided today to see how deep locus 2 goes in relation to the deposit found in CB 38, FGT I . In order to move more dirt, it was decided to change excavation methodology from sorting into buckets to sorting into the wheelbarrow and shoveling into buckets. If a special find is found in the wheelbarrow the coordinates will be taken for the 4 corners of the area from which the bucket came and an average depth will be found. Pottery and tile will be collected in a single bucket and later sorted into bowls and lattes. The dirt dump was moved from CB 40 to CB 41, 20 meters east of CB 44. If any special finds are found in their original context then those coordinates will be taken. A pick pass was done in the eastern third of the trench. While cleaning and sorting into the wheelbarrow a piece of worked chert (SF 1), unusual terracotta with a circle depression (SF 2), slag (SF #3), and another unusual piece of terracotta was found.

Unusual Terracotta

Locus 2

The western third of the trench was picked and then shoveled into buckets for sorting at the wheelbarrow. Terracotta and pottery was found, nothing of note was recovered. The middle third of the trench was picked and shoveled. Roots were trimmed. More terracotta was recovered in the center of this pass at ~37W- 38.5W/ 87S – 88.5S, however it is still small to medium sized piece and very worn. While shoveling a piece of worked chert was recovered (SF #5). The soil, after picking the whole trench, remains the same olive clay-like soil. Another shallow pick pass was started in the southern 3 rd of the trench. While this happened the 2 remaining stumps in the trench were defined. The soil from the southern third was shoveled and sorted in the wheelbarrow. Terracotta and pottery continue to be recovered.

The middle third, from ~88S to 86.5S was picked and then shoveled. Pottery and Terracotta continue to be recovered. The majority of it is pitted and worn, although some medium sized pieces were recovered (~5-8 cm large). A small piece of worked chert was recovered (SF #6). The northern third of the trench was picked on either side of the remaining 2 stumps. After completing the pick passes over the entire trench the olive clay-like soil was revealed over the entire trench. High spots throughout the trench were leveled. Closing elevations were taken.
