Pottery Summary

Over the course of the 2001 season, 623 fragments of baulk pottery were recovered from T28N.  The large majority of this pottery was coarseware and impasto while orangeware was found sporadically and only a few pieces of creamware were recovered.  One piece of greyware, medieval and Sicilian (Italo-Corinthian) respectively were recovered also.

Locus 7 produced the largest concentration of ceramic.  This locu appears to be erosional soil and is also the deepest and largest loci.  2 large diagnostic pieces of pithos.  A handle fragment ( TBKII p. 43 ) and a rim ( TBKII p. 55 ) were found in locus 7.  Locus 1 produced a greyware base ( TBKII p. 19 ) while locus 2 had no significant pottery finds.  Locus 3 remained unexcavated (the rockpack).  Locus 4 produced no significant finds.  Locus 5 produced some interesting terracotta finds and a few diagnostic pieces but nothing significant.  Locus 6 was designated as the stump and so produced no finds.  Locus 7 produced a variety of fabrics: a possible Sicilian

piece of pottery ( TBKII p. 83 ), ridge coarseware ( TBKII p. 45 ), a fenestrated fragment ( TBKII p. 51 ) and two impasto bases (TBKII p. 55 and 75 ).  Locus 8 produced a limited amount of pottery but a possible forno fragment/unusual terracotta ( TBKII p. 67 ) and a rochetto fragment ( TBKII p. 67 ) and a piece of medieval pottery were also recovered from the baulk wall.
