Daily Log:

AM:

Began CB-40 by extensively clearing the area of all trees and shrubs; most were already cut down though some required the use of sheers. We then triangulated the 4m X 4m trench boundaries. Because of the distance from origin and proximity to nearby previously established trenches, we used the northern wall of CB-39 to establish our southern wall, upon this we triangulated the remaining 3 walls. After lining our boundaries with string we removed all leaves and any organic material in order to take opening photos. Lastly, after photos opening elevations were taken using the datum point (31.40m BD) on the tree bordering the western wall.

PM:

Began the afternoon picking and sorting at the west wall (42w) and moving east. After completing the pick pass across the entire trench some of the lowest spots showed some soil lighter brown in color than the topsoil. Around 44w near the baulk wall there are spots of clumpy sandy light brown soil. The topsoil layer we are excavating has a high concentration of roots with a few various sized rocks. We are finding some very worn terra cotta throughout locus 1 so far. We finished the day clipping roots in the trench.
