tile- 5

pottery- 3

Work continued clearing the floor in a/59-60 and in S/81-82 and in clearing the covertiles in S-W/70-73.

In V-W/59-61 a topsiol cut was made. Only a few pieces of badly worn tile and pottery were recovered. The soil was dark brown and rooty as topsiol generally is. A second cut was made bringing the level of this area to 25-30 cm. More terracotta (tile) was recovered from this cut and more pottery including a couple pieces of finewear. The soil continued brown with no plaster in evidence. The tiles (approx. 1/2 cassetta) were badly worn as was the pottery. There was nothing burned - soil, plaster, tile or pottery.

The second cut in X-Z/74-75 was continued with the level of the trench to be at floor level. To the south the floor is very rough and close to the surface. It appeared to have been damaged in several places by the pick. Excavation continued moving to the center at floor level from the south and north. An akroterion fragment and piece of stamped bucchero were recovered among other things (see finds). In Y/75 about 5 cm over floor level a tile concentration (pan tiles) appeared and began to be brushed down. 1 cassetta of tile and one box of pottery.

In P-Q/74-76 burn material began to appear interspersed

with the plaster - especially in Q/74-75. In general the plaster layer lay above the burn layer. The plaster did not appear burnt and except for a very few pieces the tile and pottery are unburnt. In the corner in P/74 several large fragments appeared in the baulk and were left - particularly a pan-tile corner and covertile whose full size remained hidden. 3/4 cassetta tile, 3/4 box pottery.

The second cut in V-W/59-61 was completed with 1 cassetta tile and 1 box pottery. The covertiles in S-W/70-75, the tiles in Y/75, V/64 and those excavated and laid out from V-W/67-68.
