The 10 cm. topsoil cut begun yesterday in meters N5-6/E45-46 was extended south into meters N3-4//E45-46.  A 10-25 cm wide baulk was left at the eastern side of the cut in meters N3-6/E46 in order to both protect the stone formation to the east and to maintain the profile of the eastern portion of the cut.  The soil in meters N3-4/E45-46 was grey-brown in color with many roots.  At the end of the morning the top of a concentration of rocks wsas uncovered in meter N3/E45-46.  In addition, a few small pockets of lighter brown soil were encountered among the rocks.  Further

clearing will be necessary to determine the size, placement and orientation of the rocks.  Two worn pieces of impasto pottery and a few pieces of worn tile were discovered in teh grey-brown soil.

P.M.

The trench floor in meters N3-4/E45-46 was cleaned down with brushes and mestaline to a depth of ca 10-12 cm.  The soil in these meters began to change from a dark to lighter brown at a depth of ca 12 cm.  In addition, the rock concentration uncovered this morning in meters N3/E45-46 was cleaned dwon for further definition.  Clearing revealed the concentration to be primarily composed of small rocks and to be mostly restricted to meter N3/E45.  A rough sketh was made of the rocks in order to document their position (see ).  Two small pieces of worn impasto and a few small pieces of worn tile, including two amorphous vitrified chunks, were found during clearing in meters N4/E45-46.  No material was

found in meters N3/E45-46.
