The portion of the I-J/11 baulk cleared yesterday to teh south of the red stained area was scraped down to a uniform level - ca. 5 cm above the trench floor.  At this level the soil was found to contain a light concentration of small pieces of orange and yellow plaster.  Several small pieces of carbon also became visible amidst the plaster.  It is possible that this plaster may form part of the lining of the forno.

Work also began in clearing down the portion of the baulk left

standing to the north of the red stained area in meters I-J/12-13.  The soil in teh baulk was grey-brown in color and contained several small rocks.  A small pocket of light brown clay-like soil was found just below the top of the baulk at a depth of ca. 5 cm in meter I-J/13.  A sample of this light brown soil was bagged for analysis.  A few, small pieces of tile and plaster were found during clearing.  The baulk in the area between meters I-J/12-13 currently stands at a height

of ca. 40 cm above the trench floor.

Clearing with brush and mestaline also continued in meters H/13-14 in order to more clearly define the second ring of burning.  The pieces of plaster uncovered yesterday in the northwest corner of meter H/14 were found to form part of the continuation of the lining of the ring.  In addition, close sweeping of the area around the plaster revealed faint traces of the red burning stain.
