Work began in SF-4 with a pick pass in locus 12, starting in the south and moving north.  The soil remained consistent with the previous description on page 107.  At the same time, the soil in locus 13 continued to be leveled in order to expose the extent of the sandy yellow soil that was found on 17 July.

Special Find #1

Incised Pan Tile

Locus 12

Special Find #2

2 bronze pendants, bronze chain, bronze links

Locus 12

27.69 AE

137.31 E / 34.65 S

It should be noted that the bronze pieces which were made special find #2 were found in the western section of locus 12 as were all bronze fragments recovered thus far from locus 12.  In this area, more concentrated carbon inclusions have also been found.

(DIAGRAM OF TRENCH)

Around mid-morning it was decided to open a new locus, Locus 14, in order to bring the entirety of SF-4 down to the same elevation.  Locus 14 will encompass the rock feature that was previously Locus 8.  The coordinates of the locus are as follows:

NE = 139 E / 32 S

SE = 139 E / 33.73 S

NW = 136 E / 32 S

SW = 136 E / 32.5 S

Opening Elevations for Locus 14 are as follows:

NE = 118cm bd = 27.97 AE

SE = 84cm bd = 28.31 AE

NW = 139cm bd = 27.76 AE

SW = 140cm bd = 27.75 AE

After opening photos were taken, the loose surface rocks were removed from Locus 14.  Next, a pick pass was completed in the entirety of Locus 14.  The rocks recovered and removed were medium sized (15-30cm).  The soil in between the rocks is light brown and very crumbly.  There are also many roots included in the soil.

Special Find #5

Cavetto Fragment

Locus 14

114cm bd = 28.01 AE

137.72 E / 32.64 S

While rocks were being removed from Locus 14, the soil in Locus 13 continued to be leveled down with baulk hammers and trowels.  After this, it was decided to end work in Locus 13 and concentrate on work in Locus 14.  Work will resume in Locus 13 when Locus 14 is level with the soil in Loci 13 and 12.  Closing elevations are as follows:

NE = 136cm bd = 27.79 AE

SE = 134cm bd = 27.81 AE

NW = 131cm bd = 27.84 AE

SW = 126cm bd = 27.89 AE

Work was halted in all of SF-4 in order to remove the tree in the center of Locus 12.

The remaining stump and supporting soil was declared Locus 15.  No coordinates will be taken for this locus.  All measurements will be taken from existing base lines.  After the tree was removed, the soil is Locus 14 continued to be picked up.  At the same time, Locus 15 was picked in order to bring the locus down to the surface level of Locus 12.  The soil is Locus 15 is light brown and very crumbly.  This color and texture may be due to the fact that the soil was exposed to the sun and other elements throughout the course of excavation.

Special Find #6

Bronze Tack

Locus 15

P.M.

Work began in the afternoon by continuing to clear the soil loosened by the morning's pick passes on Loci 14 and 15.  The soil is both loci remains consistent with previous descriptions.

(DIAGRAM OF TRENCH)

Next, Locus 15 was picked twice more.  As the loose soil was picked up, it was noticed that the soil was becoming increasingly darker brown in color and clay-like in consistency.  In addition, Locus 14 was picked again.  The soil is becoming more clay-like and moist.  There are also patches of yellow soil with large carbon inclusions.

When the surface level of Locus 12 was reached in Locus 15, Locus 15 was closed.  Closing photos were taken.  Next, a pick pass was begun in the eastern section of Locus 12.

The day ended by cleaning up the trench and removing the lines which marked off the trench in preparation for site photos on the weekend.  The nails around which the string was wrapped will remain in place.
