Area H

Trench 2

June 4, 2005

The work of today started with a brief summary and with a consultation about the trench with Bradley Parker. Before starting to excavate, the workers and I, we tried to find equipment to dig from the other trenches.

The aim in the trench is to get almost 1 meter deep at the eastern portion of the trench which is being labeled as Locus 13 by Marco Baldi. So far H2; Locus 13 seems to be 65 cm away from the bottom level of the sounding H1 which had been opened in 2001 by me. If we might face a context that may correspond to the context of the sounding H1 then we will take Locus 7 and Locus 9 down. But, if we will be not able to find any context that may correspond to the context of the sounding then the final decision will happen; the trench will be closed.

We started to remove dirt from Locus 13 which is a hard ashy locus. But this locus yields certain amount of bones and pottery. As mentioned the texture of Locus 13 is hard and the hardness of the soil makes it difficult for us to remove dirt. The color of Locus 13 is 5 Yr 4/1 dark gray.

We started to remove the dirt of Locus 13 at 06: 25 and till 11: 00 we were able to remove 45 to 50 cm of dirt away from the locus. The pottery pieces that are coming up seem to be Chalcolithic (but might be 2nd millennium stuff too) to me; why I think so because of their texture and ware. This will be investigated.

Our second goal is get 50 cm more deep at Locus 13 (the locus still remains the same locus number because the context of the locus hasn’t changed yet). On the other hand I have the hope f hitting more or less the same context of the sounding H1; why I have that hope depends on the pot sherds that came up form the locus and it also depends on the 4 pieces of obsidian blades which have the KT # as 55.

We had to stop earlier than we had planed and I was not able to take my closing elevations for today. The strong wind and heavy rain can be blamed for this.

The score of the workers;

Niyazi Budak= 10

Hakan Kılıç= 9.8 (he worked after breakfeast)

Mikail Kaşıklı= 7

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
