A.M.

Work continued in clearing and defining the plaster within the interior of the forno in meters H-I/11-12. A few, additional pieces of plaster were exposed in meters H-I/11. The upper forno was then swept and photographed. At the end of the afternoon it was decided to cease any further excavation of the upper forno until next season. The clearing of the ca. 25cm strip extending across the central portion of meters H-I/13 also continued. As excavation progressed, the area of black burn soil exposed at the intersection between meters H-I/13 began to diminish

in size and was gradually replaced by galestra. The black "burned" soil has a mottled appearance and contained a large amount of disintegrated yellow and red plaster. Notable was the discovery of three fenestrated vessel fragemnts at a depth of ca. 94cm in the black soil. In addition, at the end of the morning further traces of the band of red stained soil were found in meter I/13 at the depth of ca. 95cm. It would appear that the band of red soil demarcates the outer edge of the black burned earth in meters H-I/13.

A sample of the plaster lining the interior of the upper forno

was removed for analysis. The piece was taken from meter I/11.
