28 July 2015

AM

The morning began using a pickaxe and hand picks to break up the soil around the large stump in the northeast corner of Locus 5 so that it may potentially be removed at some point in the near future. Once the soil was sufficiently broken up and some of the roots were clipped, the soil was shoveled into buckets and hand sorted into wheelbarrows. Because little work has taken place recently in Locus 5 the soil is still yellowish-brown and clay-like with a few small patches of the yellowish gritty soil previously mentioned. After the soil was cleared and sorted, work in T-75 paused briefly while the remainder of the baulk between T-75, T-76 ( KD III ), and T-78 ( KRK IX ) was removed.

Work resumed in T-75, focusing on removing the soil and some roots from the large stump in the northeast corner.

Small concentrations of terra cotta have been recovered from the stump.

Work continued on the stump in the northeastern corner, removing soil and clipping roots so that the stump may be removed at

some point in the near future.

The loose soil was cleaned up from the stump and roots were clipped until lunch.

PM

The afternoon commenced with defining the stump in the eastern baulk wall. The roots of the stump were defined and cut off with a saw. Soil was picked up and sorted into buckets. Small amounts of terra cotta have been found.

The loose soil was cleared up and roots were clipped until the end of the day. Due to no work taking place in Locus 5 , closing elevations were not taken.
