Locus 8 was closed and Loci 9 and 10 were declared open.  Opening photos and elevations for both loci were taken.

Work began with a pick pass of Locus 9 , the extremely hard-packed, yellowish soil containing small carbon inclusions. Locus 9 was excavated first for it was at the top of this soil that the rosette applique (see p. 157 ), which is identifiably archaic in period, while the heavily mottled soil of Locus 10 is typically associated with the post-orientalizing-complex destruction, in order to level the plain for the construction of the archaic building; therefore, it seems likely that Locus 9 is a more recent deposit than Locus 10 .

Locus 9 , the extremely hard-packed, yellow soil, contains very little material, although some fragments of tile have been recovered and the soil appears to contain some carbon inclusions, indicating that this is not a geological feature or a natural deposit.  Soil is shovelled into buckets and sorted in the wheelbarrow.

Another pick pass was completed in Locus 9 , with soil being shovelled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow.  During this pick pass, the same dark, reddish, heavily mottled soil of Locus 10 began to appear, and so the remaining hard packed, yellow soil was removed in order to completely expose the mottled soil of Locus 10 .  Once the remaining hard, yellow soil was removed, closing photos and elevations were taken for Locus 9 .

Locus 10 was declared open throughout the entire trench, having been extended to the area that was Locus 9 .  The pick pass was begun in the southeast corner of the trench, where the elevation is slightly higher and where there may still be some backfill remaining from T-23.  Thus, for the sake of time, soil from this quarter was shovelled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow.  The soil matrix itself is a dark brown but contains many inclusions of terracotta, as well as plaster, which gives the

soil its red color.  During this pick pass, a bronze fragment was recovered (Find #1).

The pick pass that was begun in the morning was completed.  The soil matrix itself is very dark brown and contains many inclusions of terracotta and charcoal, as well as chunks of plaster.  Soil is now sorted directly into buckets while in the trench, due to the high concentration of materials present after the pick pass.  During this pick pass, another bronze fragment (Find #2) and an incised pottery sherd (Find #3) were recovered.
