daily log

The afternoon began by selecting an appropriate location and determining the best method to lay out CB-49. Triangulation using the walls of CB-45 and CB-46 assisted in calculating accurate grid points. The trench is 2 meters by 3 meters and is located 1 meter north of the north wall of CB- 47. The location rests between CB-45 and CB-46. The area was cleared of debris to prepare for excavation. A terracotta dump was established north of the trench, while a dirt dump was already established approximately 20 meters to the south of the trench.

A pick-pass using the pointed end of a pickaxe was started in the northern portion of the trench. The soil was the humus layer and consisted of multiple root clumps. The color was a dark brown and was very dry. The soil was sorted in the trench into buckets. A moderate amount of terracotta was found including small amounts of pottery. Prior to beginning to excavate opening photos were taken and opening elevations were recorded for locus 1.

Locus 1 Opening Elevations:

NW: 30.06 AE

NE: 30 AE

SE: 29.92 AE

SW: 29.98

A small piece of medieval pottery was found in the southern portion of the trench in the topsoil.
