Daily Logs

27 July 2011

AM:

Rainfall overnight caused for markedly moist soil. The moisture in the soil caused the lower (absolute elevation because of slope) Locus 6 (northern extension) to appear slightly darker than the higher Locus 7 (northern extension). Regardless of the slight soil color variation\x97due to moisture and lack of sunlight\x97the soils remain their current Locus designations.

Morning work began in three areas. The northern most meter of the northern extension ( Locus 6 ) was picked in order to find the extent of the southern tile feature Though this meter was higher in elevation, the quantity of tile was not struck with the pick as it was yesterday. While sorting, this area will be troweled to define the feature in more detail. Simultaneously, a pick pass was completed across the Locus 7 southern extension. Soil will be sorted with a trowel in order to similarly define appearing rocks and terracotta Lastly, the tree stump in the southern wall of Locus 6 was defined to help foster its removal.

The tree stump is well defined\x97removing it may begin later in the morning. The terracotta feature in the southern half of Locus 6 is more defined and, as of now, seems to stop approximately at 30S. That said, the northern half (29S-30S) remains slightly higher.

Another, light pick pass will occur here to help level the surface and reveal the extent of the feature. Meanwhile, in the southern extensions, the most southern meter (34S-35S) of Locus 7 is beginning to reveal many pockets of light yellow and light gray gallestra.\x97possibly also accounting for the lighter soil color of Locus 7 . The southern wall was baulked to help shed light on a possible soil change and scraping with trowels worked from south to north to further reveal the gallestra like soil. While this was done, the northern portion of this Locus was troweled to further reveal the extent of the feature. Large rocks and terracotta continue south of the northern wall for approximately \xbd meter\x97more defining needs to be done to find the true extent.

The stump, after being defined, was struck with an axe to remove it. The tap root is very deep, but the superficial portion of the tree stump was removed. Since the feature was partially covered with wood and dirt, the terracotta was further defined with trowels, as was the remaining portion of the stump. Additionally baulk walling was done along the S wall of Locus 7 . This was the last of the work done this morning because of the rain.

Pottery was counted in the mag because of the heavy rainfall occurring on the hill. Pottery summaries for the day are:

Locus 6 :

Terracotta: \xbe bowl

Pottery: 13 pieces

Locus 7 :

Terracotta: \xbe bowl

Pottery: 36 pieces

PM:

Excavation ended after the morning due to rain.
