Pottery: 1              Tile: 3 1/2

The stacked cover tiles lifted yesterday had joins found and taped to be brought down.

The cut to the floor in M/84-5 and T/83-4 was continued.  In T/83, large chunks of plaster-like material came up very easily.  Although there was a great deal of root damage here (ST/83-85), this didn't appear to be floor.  None had flat sides.  In M/84-85, no floor was found but a great deal of plaster and some pan and cover tile.  A heavy burn area extended at trench floor level (60-65 cm) in these meters with the occasional burnt or vitrified tile.  Several "rabbit fangs" were found in this plaster concentration.

A topsoil cut was begun in MN/86-88.  The soil was dark brown and very rooty with worn tile and pottery found.  Some bronze slag and a rabbit jaw were also found at this high level (45-50 cm) above the floor.

In Y/73, more unfired cover tiles were exposed and PVA'd.  The eastern end of these tiles (lying almost in Z/73) were badly deteriorated, much worst than the western half.  They did not appear burnt, but root damage was considerable.

Several pithos fragments from the baulk at YZ/57 were removed to check for joins.

The baulks at M/77-85 were shaved to be drawn by the architect.

P.M.

The cover tiles in YZ/57-58 were completed being lifted.

Topsoil cut to 10-15 cm in MN/86-88 was completed.  1 1/2 cassetti of mostly worn tile were collected, including one vitrified tile and a piece of slag.  Some plast was found, including several large flat-edged pieces.  1 bag of pottery was representative and included two nice bases, one bucchero, one fine orangeware.  The soil continued dark brown and very rooty with lots of surface stone.  A few pithos fragments were also found.
