Conclusion
The excavation of Rect. 5 revealed a series of large stones aligned east to west paralleling the northern edge of Rect. 5 ( see p. 19 ). A large mass of heavily packed dirt intermixed with small rocks was uncovered directly north of this alignment of stones. Measurements revleaed that each large stone was approx. 1.25 m from center to center. The decisive spacing suggests that these stones were used for column bases.
Section A-F/11-12, in the N.W. section of Rect. 5, revealed what appeared to be a corner of a lower building foundation wall aligned north to south ( see p. 12 ). A large, long rectangular stone (D-C/11) seemed to initiate the start of this wall from the westernmost column base stone. The wall, however, disintigrates in to a confused rock packing. Only a tile fall was found in section F-11 and it provided two cover tiles and some chunks of smooth, finished plaster. This plaster is stored in the box of material labeled Rect. 5, 1976
Similarly, no evidence for lower building foundations exist in the N.E. section of Rect. 5 ( see pgs. 3, 4, 5 ). Only a sporadic rock packing exists south of the large column base stones.
Exploratory trenches C-J/15 and C-J/18 ( see pg. 19 ) reavealed nothing more than a concentrated packing of small stones roughly aligned east to west.
Aside from the discovery of the large stone alignment, no evidence for lower building foundation walls was found. The excavation of area A-J/6-8 offered no proof of a lower building wall ( see pgs. 26, 27 ). Given the existence of these column bases it is not unlikely that a similar series of stones exist further south of Rect. 5
