28 th June 2016

The trenches were established from the lines of those in 2015. The carpet was removed from the court, the area cleaned, photos taken, elevations taken, and Locus 1 was declared across the trench.

Opening Elevations: Locus 1

N.W. = 305.08m A.S.L.

N.E. = 305.09m A.S.L.

S.E. = 305.10m A.S.L.

S.W. = 305.13m A.S.L.

Following this excavation commenced in the eastern 1.5m of the trench. The method was to pick-axe and remove the soil with shovels. In sum 5 pick-passes were completed this morning. Locus 1 consists of the construction

fill of the tennis court. A light, 2-3cm, covering of sand lies over a packing of small- (5cm) and medium (c. 15 cm) sized stones. This is densely compacted into a dark-brown clay-like soil. Much of the soil is blue in colour presumably discolouration from the green carpet/artificial turf that lay over the court. Some material culture is present also a few fragments of modern and ancient tile, pottery, modern glass, plastic and remains of organic material.

In the afternoon the same method of excavation was used to explore the eastern 1.5M. A further 10 pick-passes were completed. Locus 1 remains a consistent and densely compact construction fill with little material

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
