June 23, 1987
The floor of the south east building was cleared for the first two hours.
Excavation continued in sections MNO/71-77 and LM/78-81, following the work of the past two days.
In N/75 a piece of lateral sima was recovered. Otherwise section MNO/71-77 yielded assorted pottery fragments, including pithos, sling stone-like stones, (3) plaster pieces, both large and small, and tile (3/4 cassetta).
In LM/78-81, excavation continued to uncover the lavel ca. 80-90 cm below surface and to isolate
the artifacts. More bronze flakes were discovered (L/78) as well as a piece of Corinthian or Italo-Corinthian pottery (L/78). The latter was left in situ. Plaster fragments were also recovered, again with flat edges and reed marks visible. In L/79 the soil was full of chalky material.
Excavation continued in both areas. The second cut in MNO/71-77 was completed, revealing an area full of rocks and file fragments, including an oversized flange piece which may belong to a sima (M/75, 30-40 cm). Part of the stump in MNO/74-75 was removed. Pottery finds were mostly confined to [?] and oragne ware.
In section LM/78-81, work continued from the morning. The piece of Corinthian pottery was removed to protect it from breaking. A buccheroid foot was also found (L/79) but otherwise pottery finds were minimal. In all, the area displayed a high concentration of tile and pithos fragments in L/78 80-90cm below. Rocks, terra cotta pieces, plaster and carbonized material--wood especially, as well as some bone were also prominent. The area was also
cleaned down and photographed.
