The third cut begun Wednesday in meter I/43 to a depth of ca. 45-50 cm was continued west into meters I/42 and north into meters H/42-43. The soil in the cut remained light bronw in color with a sandy consistency. This sandy soil contained sporadic concentrations of carbonized wood and disintegrated plaster. In addition, all of the pottery recovered today was in small pieces and most displayed signs of burning. Beginnin at a depth of ca. 32 cm, a group of large rocks
was encountered in meter H/43. Further clearing will be necessary to determine their position and orientation. One quarter of a casetta of small pieces of worn tile and one box of pottery, including some fine bucchero sherds were discovered. A few, small amophous pieces of bronze were also found.

The third cut was completed in meter H/42 and extended north into meters G/42 and 43, bringing the depth of the trench in these areas to ca. 45-50 cm. The soil in meter H/42 consisted of the same light brown sandy soil enountered to the south and east in meters I/42-43 and meter H/43. Relatively little material was found in this sandy soil. Only one quarter of a box of worn, mostly coarse pottery and approximately one eight of a cassetta of small worn pieces of tile were recovered. A few small pieces of carbon and two amorphous pieces of bronze were also found.
The soil in meters G/42-43, however, while remaining light brown in color, became progressively more clay-like in texture. This light brown, clay-like soil contained almost no material. Only two small pieces of tile and three sherds of pottery were found in meters G/42-43.
Additionally, the concentration of rocks encountered this morning in meter H/43 was found to extend to the nroth into meter G/43. No additional rocks, however, were found to the west in meters G-H/42- Cleaning of the rocks revealed them to be irregularly placed without any definite pattern of deposition. Further clearing of the rocks will be undertaken tommorrow.
