Daily Log 5/7/2010
A pick pass was completed between the 2 stumps in the northern half of the trench to remove the remaining soil of Locus 1 . The stumps in the trench and along the southern baulk wall were defined and cleaned. The roots were clipped. Under stump E in the southern baulk a yellowish brown soil was found under and amoung the roots. A few pieces of carbon were found in the pick pass. Most of the locus 1 soil has been removed from between the stumps. The sumps were defined and pieces removed with hand pick and axes. Parts of stumps B and C ( see sketch on pg 17 ) were removed. With the stumps being better defined and the locus 1 soil removed from in and around them, as well as the fact that the rest of the locus 1 soil has been removed from the trench it was decided to close locus 1.

During the previous days excavation it was discovered that the northeast corner of the trench was backfill (see 2/7/10).
therefore Locus 2 will be over the whole trench except that corner. Elevations and opening photos were taken.

Locus 2 is a medium brown clay like soil that extends throughout most of the trench, except the northeast corner. There are roots in the locus, as well worn pieces of terracotta. Few pieces of pottery and small stones are also in the locus.
Christina Cabra wrote the early afternoon entry: Pick pass on western most meter, soil color unchanged; clumpy clay-like consistency, yellowish brown in color. More material in north corner and still lots of roots from the stumps as well as a large stone. Possible soil darkening in southwest most corner. Sorting in northwest corner revealed a slag nugget (special find #1).

Andrew Carroll resumes entry: A second pick pass was completed in the middle 2 meters of the trench. The stumps are still hindering picking in the middle of the trench. Carbon is still being found in the soil. Not much material is coming out of the pass. A final pass was done in the eastern meter of the trench. No material was uncovered in the pass and there are fewer roots in this pass.
