daily log

9 July 2015

AM

The work day commenced with hand picking in the northern half of the trench around the stump in order to remove enough soil from the base so that it may be removed in the near future. Additionally, work continued on the baulk walls to trim them back. The soil remains yellowish brown and clay-like, and continues to dry out and become very friable throughout the day due to the sunlight.

During clearing a piece of slag was recovered.

Find #1 : Slag

Elevation: 26.51 m AE

Coordinates: 103.52E/43.17S

Locus 2

Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery have been recovered from both Locus 2 and the baulk walls. A fair amount of tile and pottery has been recovered from around the stump and in its' roots.

Once the soil was removed from the stump it was decided to focus solely on the baulk walls, as the stump is still too deep to axe it out at this time. Large concentrations of small fist sized rocks continue to be found throughout the trench.

A fragment of ridged pottery was recovered during sorting.

Find #2 : Ridged pottery fragment

Elevation: ~26.35 m AE

Coordinates: ~102E/47.50S

Baulk Trim

Once baulk trimming was finished it was decided to perform a pick pass in the southernmost meter of the trench south of the rock feature in order to lower that area of the trench as well as to expose any potential coursing. Soil was hand sorted into buckets using hand picks and trowels.

Another pick pass was executed south of the rock feature in order to remove some of the mounds in the area and

to further lower the level of that area. The soil in that area continues to be very loose and clay-like. Additionally, due to the stump along the southern baulk wall several roots are present in the area.

Another pick pass occurred in the southernmost meter of the trench in order to lower that area and to level it out. Thus far, very little material has been recovered from this area, which is potentially due to erosion washing any material further south down hill to a lower elevation. Once the soil was cleared roots were clipped until lunch.

PM

The afternoon began with leveling the southern end of the trench with a pickaxe. The soil is in lumps that break into a gritty and sandy soil. The northern baulk wall was trimmed and a ridged pottery piece was found there.

Find #3 : Ridged pottery piece

Elevation: ~26.52 m AE

Coordinates: ~102.32E/44S

Baulk Trim

The large rocks at the southern end were defined after the pick pass and the soil was leveled with the help of hand picks. Very little material has been found at the southern end of the trench. Roots were clipped. Closing elevations were taken.
