Daily Log

Excavation was ended today in locus 16.  Although most of the locus was brought down to sterile soil or bedrock, there may still be material at a lower level in the NW corner of the locus.  Approximately 1 dozen fragments of terracotta recovered of which several pieces were saved as special find #1.  Three pottery sherds were found.

Closing depths of locus 16:

NE corner:  62 cm. below datum

NW corner:  56 cm. below datum

SW(1) corner:  4 cm. above datum

SW(2) corner:  4 cm. above datum

SW(3) corner:  4 cm. above datum

SE corner:  11 cm. above datum

Balk trim was carried out in the entire trench.  Eight terracotta fragments recovered and no pottery found.  Closing photographs and depth measurements were taken ( see enclosed image, pg. 61 ).

Also, some balk trim was carried out in VT-1 just north of the stone feature in VT-2 to see whether the stones extended further north.  No new stones were found.  During this operation approximately 3/4 can of terracotta fragments recovered and approximately 3 latte boxes of pottery.  Two special finds were made here.
