For Thursday, June 16, 1983: T-26.1982,1983 [ Drawing of trench ]
June 16, 1983
Due to rain early this morning, the soil in areas already partially excavated was determined to be too wet to dig through. Therefore, a new extension of T-26.1983 was mapped out to include meters X,Y,Z,alpha-67-71. These meters were cleared of remaining brush and stones and stumps which had been placed here during excavation of T-26.1982. The first cut, to ~20cm, was made to remove the topsoil. The soil was dark and rooty but contained some tile and
pottery. Pithos fragments and amorphous terracotta lumps were also encountered. The "floor" is believed to have been reached at ~20cm in Z-71,70 but is not apparent to the south of these meters, perhaps because it has finally reached an end here. What appears to be a stone column base was encountered in alpha-69 at ~20cm. This would be in line with those in along the southern flank of the building here. Note that the soil of this cut contained many small stones throughout and a number of large stumps are present in these meters.
The cut was completed throughout these meters (X-alpha,67-71) except X,Y,Z,alpha-67, which were left unexcavated due to lack of time and large stumps. Note that careful inspection of meters alpha-71-69 did reveal that there is a "floor" just beneath the topsoil.
