Introduction

In 1998, T26 was extended northward, (PCS I, JBB I, CED I & II), in order to explore the area southeast of the Archaic complex.  T26 revealed roof tiles and akroteria, as well as weaving and other workshop-related materials (see HDA I & II, NM II, TT II & III, CED I).  Work in this area also revealed tile lines of an uncertain purpose, (see TT II, p. 163; TT III, p. 54).

In 2003, (CED I, p. 86), excavation exposed a large flat stone in the northern end of T26, associated with the Orientalizing destruction horizon.  A similar stone was discovered in 1978 in T22, (see SL I, p. 85).  The positioning of the two stones suggested a relationship between them, which merited further investigation.

Between T22 and T26, T30 was opened in 2003 with the primary purpose of discovering whether another Orientalizing structure existed to the north of the workshop, (OC II/Workshop). Excavations did

in fact uncover another large, flat stone in the northwest corner within the same stratigraphic layer (T30 AGG/CNT I, p. 115-117).  Also in 2003, T31 was opened between  T30 and the workshop, (OC II/Workshop) with a similar pupose, and was excavated to the 6th century levels, (KSK Ib, p. 57).  Work in this area is expected to continue this season.

In addition this season, four trenches will be opened immediately to the northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast of the original iteration of T30, with the common goal of determining the presence of another structure north of the workshop, (OC II), during the Orinetalizing phase of the site.  Further goals of our trench to the southwest of T30 are:

1.  To illuminate to a greater extent the destruction horizons relating to the Archaic building complex.

2.  To reveal the topography of the Orientalizing levels.

A datum point was exablished at the southwest corner of the trench on the stake, at an elevation of  28.10M.   All pottery will be quantified in latte boxes measuring 16 x 9 x 5 cm and all tile in a round bowl with a volume of 2959.21 cm3.
