Before work began there was some discussion concerning the whereabouts of T-6b, the choices being H-I/20-22 versus H-I/23-24. It was decided that removing I/20-22 would be most helpful in answering the question.
I/20-22 was removed with pik and shovel to a level of ?cm. This work, except for the soil under a large stump in I/21, was completed in three hours. The tile and pottery was saved seperately from that in I/22 and also that in I/21 (the stump).
I/20 pottery= 1/2 liter box
I/20 tile= 1/4 cassette
I/21 pottery= 2/3 liter box
I/21 tile=1/4 cassette
I/21 stump= 3 sherds
tile= 1 handful
One note about the soil of I/20-22. In general the soil of this area was the same as that removed from H/20-22:
medium brown clayey soil with stones of various sizes: Boulder-sized stones, three of them, were removed from alongside the south baulk in I/20-22. Except for this area the composition of the soil was consistant.
Once the soil of I/20-22 was removed to the depth of H/20-22, work began on the soil beneath the stump. Not much material was recovered. The complete excavation of the roots of the stump was incomplete at the end of the day.
