Daily Log

July 25, 2003

AM

This morning it was made a priority to define the stratigraphy and locate the black burn layer.  The black burn layer was visible on the western side from E 161 to 162 in the morning.  It was left alone yesterday, but it was counted as the same Locus as the brown soil on the eastern side.  It is now quite apparent that these are two seperate loci.  Elevations will be retaken today, and the burn layer, a dark brown soil filled with burnt terracotta, ceramics, bone, and other artifacts, and charcoal, will be designated Locus 7.

PM

The baulk walls were cut back again today to view the stratigraphy.  Locus 6, the olive brown stratum, continued to be excavated.  Underneath a stump on the eastern end, a large pythos rim appeared to stick out of the wall.

Elevations for 7/25/03

Locus 6:

  • (162.13, -58.5)  1.98 b.d = 27.02
  • (164, -58.5)       1.86 b.d. = 27.14
  • (164, -60.5)       2.01 b.d. = 26.99
  • (161.80, -60.5)  2.00 b.d. = 27.00

Locus 7:

  • (162.13, -58.5)  1.98 b.d = 27.02
  • (164, -58.5)       1.86 b.d. = 27.14
  • (164, -60.5)       2.01 b.d. = 26.99
  • (161.80, -60.5)  2.00 b.d. = 27.00

Locus 7 runs from E 162.13, S 58.5 to E 164, 58.5 on the northern edge; and E 161.80, S 60.5 to E 164, 60.5 on the southern edge.  Olive brown soil of Locus 6 appears to overlay this burn layer on the other side of the trench.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
