Pick pass begun in the western most meter wide area of the trench. Soil consistent with Locus I , but coming down on soil change. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench. Rocks still appearing over the area of the trench, 4-8cm size, but unsure of any regularity. Pick pass begun in middle meter wide area. Soil consistent with Locus 1 , sorted and cleared from trench. Some small rocks appearing, but not in the same concentration of the western meter. Pick pass done in the last eastern meter of the trench. Soil sorted and cleaned, remains consistent with Locus 1 soild. In cleaning found Medieval pottery, possibly associated with the piece found last week ( 21 ).

Locus 1

Trench leveled and all top soil, Locus 1 soil removed in preparation for declaration of Locus 2 . Roots clipped over entire trench. In cleaning found piece of Medieval glass.

Locus 1


Leveling, baulk walling, and root clipping continued in preparation for declaration of Locus 2 . Opening photographs for Locus 2 taken. Opening elevations for Locus 2 taken:

NW Corner: 28.95m A.E.

NE Corner: 28.83m A.E.

SE Corner: 29.01m A.E.

SW Corner: 29.03m A.E.

Pick pass done in the western meter strip in Locus 2 soil which is medium brown claylike soil. Soil sorted and cleared from trench. Much fewer rocks at this level, though a few small ones still appearing. Pick pass done in the central meter of the trench. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 and is sorted and cleared from the trench. Still small rocks appearing

over the area of the trench. Last meter area of the trench picked, soil sorted and cleared. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 . Soil has some carbon inclusions and also many small rocks. Roots clipped over the area of the trench.

Locus 2:

Terra cotta: 1/3 bowl
