Pre-Summary

Trenches 1AB and 1AE and the section of 1AB +1AE which was excavated separately. For diagram see p. 97

Trench 1AB excavated as described on p. 79 , 81 , 85 , 89 , 95 , 103 , 107 .

Trench 1AE excavated as described on p. 97 , 105 , 109 , 111 , 113 , 115 , 119 .

Because of the great amount of material (tiles, pottery and plaster) that was found when the level along the N edge of the wall running W to E was taken down an area was separated and excavated as a unit, that is the whole of 1AE N of the wall and part of 1AB with a stop at 3.10m facing W, where the

level was taken down to virgin soil, see .

The unit 1AB + 1AE was excavated as described on p. 127 , 129 , 131 , 133 , 135 , 139 , 141 , 143 , 145 .

The northgoing wall described on p. 131 was the first thing to the uncovered when the level was taken down further, starting from 20cm, and was used as a dividing line between the different areas.

1) The area W of the northgoing wall was then excavated and showed as a distinctive mark a burnt layer over an irregular pavement, therefore the name "burnt area" though burnt patches appeared also in the other part of the trench.

FINDS

from the joint area marked as 1AB + 1AE 10-24 preceded by individual trench designations 1AB 1-7 and 1AE 1-10 for the earlier finds, from the strata A and B.

2) The area W of the burnt area was excavated as descibed on p. 139 and 143 and was taken down to virgin soil and bedrock. Inside a pit formed by bedrock and stones laid in a curvey line was formed a great amount of pottery, especially pithoi fragments, and tiles.

3) The area E of the northgoing wall was excavated as described on p. 141. The irregular stones appearing might be part of the pavement W of the wall, which in that case was built on top of a stone pavement, but still at a lower level than the main wall. The northgoing wall seemed to be attached to the main wall, as no clear break was noticeable.
