Work continued this morning clearing down and defining the red stained area in the baulk between meters I-J/11-12. The thin layer of soil left above the stained area was dradually scraped down in order to reveal the height of the red stained soil. Next, the southern quarter of the red stained area was removed down to a point just above the floor level fo the trench adn a section was drawn by the architect. Several
small stones were found in the reddish soil as well as sporadic flakes of carbon. A chunk of plaster was also exposed in the red soil at a depth of ca. 27.5 cm. This plaster will be drawn in the plan by the architect. It is possible that the plaster and stones may have been used in the construction of the forno wall. Notable was the discovery of a fenestrated vessel fragment in the reddish stained galestra at a depth of ca. 39 cm.

Work contined clearing down and defining the red stained area in the baulk between meters I-J/11-12. Clearing revealed that the reddish stain extends upward from the stratum of galestra at the base of the baulk into the stratum of grey-brown soil above. It was also noted that the red stain does not extend through the I-J/11-12 baulk, but instead is restructed to the first ca. 5-6 cm of the baulk's western face. The soil behind the red stained area is grey to light
( )
brown in color. Several small pieces of plaster were found in this grey/light brown soil as well as some small chunks of carbonized wood. At a depth of ca. 40-44 cm, a group of small stones was exposed behind the red stained soil. These stones may constitute the eastern extension of the ring of stones found previously around the roasting pit/forno. Accordingly, these stones will be left in place to be drawn by the architect.
Additionally, the portion of the baulk left standing to the
south of the red stained area in meter I-J/11 was cleared down to a depth of ca. 90 cm - approximately 5 to 7 cm above the trench floor. The southern portion of this baulk, in length ca. 19 cm, was composed entirely of galestra and contained no material. However, the northern portion, ca. 20 cm in length, was composed of grey-brown soil and contained sporadic concentrations of carbon. A few, small pieces of plaster and a burned handle fragment were found in the grey brown soil.
At the end of the afternoon a sample of the red stained soil from the I-J/12 baulk was bagged for analysis.
Clearing of the trench floor also continued in meters H/13-14 with brushes adn mestaline in an attempt to expose more of the red ring of burning in this area. few, small pieces or orange plaster which may form part of the lining of the reing were uncovered in the southwestern corner of meter H/14. However, further clearing will be necessary in order to determine whether they form part of this feature. The soil
in this area is grey-brown in color and contains sporadic concentrations of carbon.
