AM

Work began in Locus 13 with a pick pass of the NW quarter of the trench.  Soil continues to be claylike and extremely carbon-rich, which gives the soil a dark gray color with many carbon chunks scattered throughout.  Soil is sorted in the trench.  Immediately upon picking, it was evident that this soil contains vast quantities of pottery and bone, but very little tile or plaster.  While sorting through the soil, a bronze chunk was found, and so it was decided to establish a bulk bronze box for the day for Locus 13 .  Additionally, during this pick pass, a tondo fragment with a rosette stamped on the stem (Find #1) and a spindle whorl (Find #2) were recovered, as well as a piece of cut bone (Find #3), a bronze needle (Find #4) and an iron nail (Find #5).

PM

The remainder of the dirt from the morning's pick pass was sorted and cleared.  After the soil was cleared, two patches of greenish soil appeared in the trench floor, in the NW quarter.  At this time, it is unknown whether this is a true soil change, or whether these are just patches of green soil in the dark gray, carbon-rich, Locus 13 soil.

Another pick pass was made, this time of the SW quarter.  The soil continues to be claylike, although it is loose and carbon rich, which gives the soil its dark gray color; there are numerous chunks of carbon, both small and large, intermixed in this soil.  Slightly more tile was recovered from the SW quarter than from the NW quarter, although the amount of tile and plaster is still very small when compared to the amount of pottery and bone; an extremely high quantity of pottery and bone has been found in the SW quarter which is consistent with the levels

found in the NW quarter today and throughout the whole trench yesterday.  During this pick pass, another spindle whorl (Find #6), a pottery sherd with a perforation (Find #7), and an Italo-Corinthian aryballos sherd (Find #8) were recovered.
