T-23 1981 Pottery Summary

Pottery from T-23 1981 was broken down in the same manner as T-26 1981 pottery (see MT IV, p. 35).  Again, all bucchero, grayware, and fine orangeware fragments were saved, as well as all rim, foot, and handle fragments to impasto, orangeware, and coarseware vessels.  The only pottery discarded were selected impasto, orangeware, and courseware body fragments.  This discarded pottery is labeled and stored in the second magazzino temporarily - it will later be buried in T-23 1981.  Approximately 60% of all the pottery found has been saved and is stored in MT Bk IV Representative Pottery Boxes III and IV.

As with T-26 1981, pottery from T-23 1981 did not really vary from cut to cut.  The same type of pottery was found at all depths.  However, painted pottery did seem to be more concentrated at a great depth (1.2 m), although very few painted pieces were found.  Pithos body fragments were found throughout the trench but were not saved and were discarded with tile.

The pottery illustrated on the following pages represents common shapes of T-23 1981 pottery, as well as unusual shapes.  For a detailed study of the pottery, the representative pottery boxes should be examined.
